surrey film-video festival

In the Beginning... The Surrey Film Festival 1983.

The idea of a SURREY FILM FESTIVAL (not video then) seemed a logical extension in the south-east region of the IAC (SERIAC) since the other two counties, Kent and Sussex already had long running festivals. Of the various clubs in Surrey, nine wanted to become involved in organising the new festival. Roy Pullen became the founder member of the Surrey festival and held a startup meeting at the Teachers centre, Carshalton, the home of Elmwood Cine Group, on 17 September 1982. David Heath of the Sussex film festival, the longest running in the region, came along to give advice.

The first festival took place on 22 October 1983 and was held at Surbiton Library halls in Surrey. The entrance fee was a mere £1 which was helped by sponsorship of the, then, TSB bank. The bank also helpewd out with visits to schools and universities to encourage younger people to enter.

Local advertising helped to get a good range of IAC members and many amateur movie makers not in a club, to take part. adverts were placed in numerous local papers, in TSB banks and interviews on the new County Sound local radio station in Guildford.

A donation of £100 was made to help finance the SERIAC magazine, much like similar donations from Susex and Kent. This was the main income that kept this regioojnal magazine of the IAC running.
